For everyone who wants to hate on Gabby Douglas for her “actions” after her team winning the Team Gymnastics gold, stop. The Star Spangled Banner played Tuesday night as the new “Fab 5” stood on top of the Olympic podium for their collective performances in the various gymnastic routines. Everyone but Douglas placed their hand over their heart as a natural instinct. Gabby elected to stand respectfully with her hands held in front of her.
To everyone who is jumping to a conclusion of some sort of political statement, where is the evidence? Douglas immediately released a statement where she explained that she “…never meant any disrespect and apologize if I offended anyone. I’m so overwhelmed at what our team accomplished today and overjoyed that we were able to bring home another gold for our country!” Secondly, if she needed to express her actions towards some sort of cause, then she would have said so. Let’s not pretend like this is the summer of ’68 in Mexico City.
Finally, how is one suppose to act after they have accomplished something for their country while simultaneously achieving their dream in the process? In a time where we appreciate how these athletes push what is humanly possible, can’t we appreciate that these super-star athletes are just humans like you and me? So after accomplishing your life’s work, how are you suppose to react? So let’s all accept Gabby’s apology and cheer her on when she competes for all around.
